MAME too fast!!! Help!

I JUST got started with MAME (incredible, what a walk down nostalgia lane) and
so far, I LOVE it, but one problem:

I’m a a 300mHz P2 and virtually all of the games run a bit too fast. I noticed
that the readme suggests running at a lower frame rate, but for me, that’s
resulted in the same speed game just looking worse.

What am I doing wrong?

Are you running mame through a front end or from command line (you may
have inadvertantly toggled one of the video switches)?  You shouldn’t
see more than 60fps (F11 is the counter).  Try just the command line.

‘mame.exe dkong -800 -noscanlines’ for instance.

Also try the Win32 variants for  kicks.

    welcome to the EMU world.

I’ve tried it both ways (I use MAME/W now but just started) and it doesn’t seem
    to make a difference.

    >’mame.exe dkong -800 -noscanlines’ for instance.

Okay, though Donkey Kong is a tough example. Pac Man is either running about 50%
faster than it should or I’m just really remembering it wrong. I remember being
able to turn them blue and have them stay that way for quite a few seconds. Now
they turn back within about 5 seconds…. Is it just age perhaps?

Thanks! (I’ll take that as a genuine welcome though you could have meant it
sarcastically just as well.) Been toying in this segment for about a year now
though I’ve come late to MAME.

Check the difficulty dip-switches, they control how long the ghosts are blue
after a powerpill is eaten, the hardest setting they are blue for a
ridiculousy short time (ie, the pills are near useless)

  4. admin says:

w/ Pacman if you mean that gameplay is faster (note: not the
framerate), then that can be toggled by the dip switch settings.. hit
the tab key to access them w/in the game.  Setting the level to hard
makes the ghosts bleu for a much shorter time.  I played the cabinet
version at Gameworks in Seattle for a kick and noticed that it was
behaving this way.. sure enough setting the dipswitch to hard in mame
emulates that behaviour.  Are you getting 60fps consistently using the
    F11 key to check?

The ‘unofficial’ version of Mame32 right now supports -vg in all res.
and has trakball support which the first doesn’t offer as of 27.1.

The welcome was genuine.. it wasn’t a ‘Skye’ response.

Well, for starters, you’re using a $3k machine to emulate $5 worth of computer
    chips.

    But seriously…

Check to see that you didn’t "accidentally" hit f10.  That turns off the speed
throttling (sp, I know).  With it off, the game will blast out as many frames
as your comp will allow.  With it on, it’ll only crank out 60.

(BTW, it’s great if you’re the impatient type like I am; I play Pac-Man around
90 fps most of the time using the speed cheat.  I can’t quite get as high as I
normally do, but it’s a lot more fun!)

Newbie hell strikes again. Didn’t even think of that. I just assumed that the
defaults would be indicative of what we were used to in the arcades.

Fantastic. As noted just before this, I just didn’t even think of that as a
    solution.

    -vg???

Hehehehehe…. Thanks. Are we in a safe zone here?

I had a similar problem.  I solved it by turning off the vsync waiting.
I think it was timing according to my vsync, and my monitor has a
    higher-than-60Hz refresh rate…

Anyway, whether I diagnosed the problem correctly or not, it was solved by
    disabling the vsync wait.

    good luck!

Good point. <grin> But you know these damned game publishers. If you don’t keep
moving, they just run right on by you. As one who works with games daily, I have
no choice but to keep up. The good news is, I’m not the one who generally has to
pay to do the keeping up.

    I’ll check that next. Thanks.

Once I get back into the rhythm I think I’ll give that a whirl. The first thing
on the agenda is to figure out what all the parameters do.

That could be why I wanted to check those parameters. I have a ViewSonic P815
(21") that does upwards of 139 refresh at most resolutions and I have it up that
    high (why not, right?).

Have you ever tried a computer "slower" like AT-SLOW ? They can make
    your computer a LOT slower.

  12. admin says:

    LUCKY!!!

MAME does have speed throttling.  If you’re fortunate enough to have a
computer THAT fast, give that a try.
On a P100, some games like Rastan, Ghosts N Goblins, Star Wars, etc.
    are dog-slow.
